Small sculptural vessel - Hazel Thorn
Hazel’s love of experimenting with colour, pattern and form, inspired by the natural world is clear. Growing up in a remote area of the Scotland Highlands, Hazel spent a lot of time in the woods, fields and hills, and developed a passion for making, especially weaving with reeds and grasses. She no longer uses these natural materials directly in her work, but is often inspired by them to recreate an abstracted version in metal. The technique Hazel create, fuses wires side-by-side, some of silver and some of base metal. When the resulting sheets have been formed into an object, the whole object is exposed to one chemical process, which affects each material differently. Silver areas stay white, the base metal turns black, and the alloy produced where the two have bonded becomes a blue-green colour. This new technique unlike mokume gane can be hallmarked.
