Using traditional hand skills and digital technology Kathryn creates tactile silverware that explores emerging surfaces and faceted forms. The use of new technology to design and as a method of making, has shaped the style of her work. Kathryn’s work, designed using Computer aided design software, enables her to create forms that are inspired by hammer strikes.
After completing her BA (Hons) in silversmithing at Kent Institute of Art & Design, she undertook postgraduate studies at Bishopsland, following this Kathryn went to the Royal College of Art. While studying at the RCA she had the opportunity to explore the use of digital technologies, merging traditional hammering with computer aided design.
Kathryn mixes traditional hand skills and digital technology in her Edinburgh studio, creating a range of silverware which includes boxes and vessels that explore emerging surfaces and geometric forms. By using 3D printing and lost wax casting she explores different scales and surface texture. Objects are also realised using computer numerically controlled (CNC) milling with press forming.
